dc.description.abstract The volumetric behavior of the nitrogen-hydrocarbon systems in addition to being of academic interest, is of practical value in the production of natural gasoline and crude oil. With the utilization of natural gas from fields containing high fractions of nitrogen these data become of increasing importance. Normal heptane was the hydrocarbon selected for this investigation because it is representative of the light oil fractions encountered in many condensate systems. Numerous investigators have published the results of work on volumetric and phase behavior of systems consisting of two or three pure hydrocarbons and of carbon dioxide hydrocarbons. Until the present £m data have been available on the nitrogen-paraffin hydrocarbon systems. Beattie and Kay have determined the compressibility of n-heptane at temperatures from 30° to 250%* and pressures up to 5000 psi. The density of mixtures of n-heptane and ethane have been investigated by Kay over the entire range of composition. Th connection with a study of the natural gas-heptane system Boomer, Johnson and Piercey (2) obtained solubility and phase density data on nitrogen in n-heptane at 100.9 atmospheres and temperatures from 25°C. to 125°C. Their data, although of a high order of accuracy, are of limited value because results are reported at only one pressure. The object of tills investigation has boon to obtain phase density measurements on the nitrogen-heptane system over a wide range of pressure, temperature and concentration.
