Innovations in beam-foil spectroscopy : emission spectra of nitrogen

Several methods for increasing the data acquisition rate for spectra from a beam-foil excited atomic beam are discussed; viz. a collimator whose axis is colinear with the beam axis, and light amplification. A detailed description of the augmentation of a Jarrell Ash Co. 1 Meter Czerny-Turner Spectrograph by a Two Stage Cascade Image Intensifier (RCA Model C33034) is presented. The results show that these two innovations greatly increase the efficiency of the spectra gathering system. A survey of the beam-foil excited emission spectra obtained from nitrogen ions (N+) incident at 0.91 and 0.72 Mev on a 10 p,g/cm2 carbon foil is presented, along with a preliminary identification of the observed lines. The results of this experiment are compared to results of Kay and Fink in earlier beam-foil experiments.
