dc.description.abstract The spin-lattice interaction of V2+ in MgO was measured by applying uniaxial stress and observing the shift in the EPR spectrum. The effect of uniaxial stress is explained by the addition of a spin-lattice Hamiltonian of the form HSL = DijSiSj to the spin Hamiltonian. The Dij tensor is related linearily to the strain by the relation Dij = Gijke eke , where eks is the strain, and Gijke is a fourth rank tensor called the magneto-elastic coupling tensor. Because of the cubic symmetry of MgO, the G tensor has only two independent elements, which were determined as G11 = -.4 ± .1 and G44 = -2.1 ± .4 cm-1/unit strain. These values are compared to measurements of the G tensor for Cr3+ in MgO.
