This study has developed a rheological model capable of accounting for all the significant characteristics exhibited by saturated clays in one-dimensional consolidation. The model has been developed on the basis of an assumed viscoelastic response of the soil structure to the consolidation loading, and the assumed validity of Darcy's law. Solutions for this model are obtained by approximate numerical techniques and are shown in comparison with actual behavior exhibited by all manner of clay soils. It is anticipated that the use of the proposed theory will permit a more accurate determination of field settlement rates than has been hitherto possible.
