Film flow models for the trickling filter

An inclined plate model for the trickling filter system is considered from the point of view of the transport phenomena involved with heterogeneous reaction at the interface between a bacterial film and a flowing liquid film. The problem considered is that in which diffusion of substrate to the reaction surface is of importance. The results are compared to the conventional pseudo-homogeneous reaction model and to the surface reaction model when diffusional resistance is zero. It is shown that the approximate model for substrate removal can be selected on the basis of the widely variant responses of the available models to changes in suitable parameters, particularly recirculation.
