dc.description.abstract In this research, a stage by stage optimization of the spectra of two-generator binary convolutional codes was carried out. Properties of the code tree were used to minimize the computations required in the search. The codes thus obtained are then evaluated by means of comparison to best known upper and lower bounds; with respect to single generator codes of the same transmission rate which were similarly optimized and with respect to available codes which were found optimal by means of an exhaustive search. Finally, these codes are used to evaluate spectra of dual codes derived from stage by stage optimized codes.
