Ion-molecule reactions in mixtures of methane and carbon dioxide

Using a quadrupole mass filter, ion-molecule reactions in mixtures of methane and carbon dioxide were investigated at pressures of 0.1-0.4 torn. Rate constants for several of the reactions were determined and it was found necessary to use ionic mobilities to calculate the appropriate residence times. Reaction rate constants for two of the reactions have been determined at low pressures and were lower than the values obtained in this work. One of the reactions goes to equilibrium and from the equilibrium constant a heat of reaction in close agreement with literature values was determined.
