    Abstract
    Walter Widrig is Professor of Art History Emeritus at Rice University. He came to the University in 1969 from the University of St. Thomas, and was chair of the Department of Art and Art History at Rice from 1982-1985. Professor Widrig’s areas of expertise and research interest include Roman and early Christian art and architecture, as well as the history of architecture during the Renaissance, Baroque, and Modern periods. As part of his research Professor Widrig both participated in and co-directed archaeological excavations at various sites in Italy, Libya, Cyprus, Syria, Jordan, the Balkans, Turkey, and Tunisia. His publications include a number of papers which appeared in scholarly journals, individual chapters in edited collections, and the monograph The Via Gabina Villas. In 2014 the Amici di Via Gabina Traveling Fellowship was established in honor of Walter Widrig and Philip Oliver-Smith.
