Wilbur Hess was the 1st player from Rice Institute to win the National Intercollegiate singles in 1935.

Hess, wearing a white short sleeved shirt, white shorts and white tennis shoes, is on the court, and appears to have just hit the tennis ball with a backhanded volley. The ball can be seen mid-air.
