Delegates at Jubilee of Sir Gabriel Stokes
A panoramic group photograph of the delegates who assembled for the fiftieth anniversary of the appointment of Sir George Gabriel Stokes to a professorship in mathematics at Cambridge University, England. The large crowd of delegates, most of them in academic caps and gowns, are standing in eight rough rows upon the steps in front of Pembroke College. Additional spectators can be seen along an adjoining terrace. Identified as among the group are the following: Edgar Odell Lovett, first president of the William M. Rice Institute, Spencer Cavendish, the 8th Duke of Devonshire, Chancellor of Cambridge University, Albert Michelson of the University of Chicago, and Robert S. Woodward of Columbia University. On June 1-2, 1899, Cambridge University celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the appointment of Sir George Gabriel Stokes to the Lucasian professorship of mathematics. Dr. Edgar Odell Lovett is third from right on the front row. In the middle of front row is Sir George Stokes; on his left is the 8th Duke of Devonshire, Chancellor of Cambridge University. On the extreme left of the front row is Professor Michelson of the University of Chicago. At the extreme right on the back row is Dean Robert S. Woodward of Columbia University.
