Dr. John E. Parish, professor in William M. Rice Institute’s and Rice University’s Department of English. Parish is sitting at his desk holding a pencil at either end. He is wearing a gray or tan-colored double-breasted suit jacket, a white shirt and a dark-colored bowtie. There are papers on his desk and a portion of an ashtray is visible in the lower left-hand corner. To the side is a small table with a flexible-necked reading lamp and a telephone.
