James Kinsey served as Dean of Rice University's Wiess School of Natural Sciences and was named interim provost, the position having been evacuated by Dr. Neal Lane, by President Malcolm Gillis in July 1993. Kinsey had joined Rice in 1988 as Dean of Wiess School of Natural Sciences after 25 years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a chemistry professor and as a Chairman of MIT's chemistry department. In 1994 Kinsey retired from provost.
