Breaking ground for the Mechanical Lab, Rice Institute
A scene during the earliest stages of groundbreaking for the William M. Rice Institute’s Mechanical Laboratories building. Construction workers can be seen working on the ground as well as maneuvering with teams of horses. The large expanse of ground is marked by shallow dug-outs, and a large track has been cut through the earth by the passage of the horses and their carts. A large white tent can be seen at the edge of the woods in the distant background. The angle of the photograph indicates it was taken from the nearby power-plant tower. Original resource is a black and white photographic negative.
