Rice University cheerleaders during a football game
Rice University cheerleaders performing a cheer during a football game at Rice Stadium. There is a photographer taking pictures of the event, standing next to a large megaphone resting on the ground. Spectators can be seen seated on the bleachers in the background. Original resource is a black and white photograph.
Originally called yell leaders, cheerleading started in 1916. The squad was male-only until 1953. In April of that year, Jane Ryba, Joan Ryba, and Carolyn Thomas were elected as the first female cheerleaders.
