Annie Ray Watkin, Duchess of Rice Institute
Ray Watkin Strange, wearing a festive gown as the Duchess of Rice Institute, during the 1935 Galveston Mardi Gras. She is also wearing a tiara, and the train of the gown is spread on the floor before her. Below the photograph, the following is written: "Ray Watkin - Duchess of Rice, Galveston Mardi Gras '35." She went by the name of Annie Ray as a child, and was the eldest of William Ward Watkins and Annie Ray Watkin’s children. Original resource is a black and white photograph.
Ray Watkin Strange, William Ward Watkin's eldest child, graduated from Rice in 1936 and served Rice in many areas, working on university committees, permanently endowing the William Ward Watkin Traveling Scholarship in Architecture, and supporting the Rice University Archives named in honor of her parents.
