William M. Rice Institute student John Steck, seen from behind, seated at a desk in his dormitory room. Steck is seated on a wooden straight-backed chair, his elbow resting on a writing surface extending from the desk, on which sits a brightly shining reading lamp. A similar writing surface, with drawers, is to his right, with writing materials, also lit by a reading lamp. A second, empty, chair is beside him. Also shown are a chest of drawers, a coat rack, and two windows, one of which is open. It appears to be nighttime. Written on the back of the photograph: "From James W. Casten '42, John Steck, 1940 81, wrc04402." ‘Casten’ is spelled out in block letters below the cursive version. Original resource is a black and white photograph.
