Firefighter Memorial Service, Rice Stadium
A memorial service for two Houston Fire Department officers who lost their lives in the line of duty was held at Rice Stadium on February 11, 2000. The memorial service was in honor of firefighters Lewis Evans Mayo, III, 44, and Kimberly Ann Smith, 30, who died fighting a three-alarm fire in far southwest Houston.
Firefighters in ceremonial uniform are gathered in Rice Stadium for a Firefighter Memorial Service. There is a crowded reviewing stand, with banners hung at the back, numerous large bouquets of flowers to either side, and two sections of seating, with the 50 yard field mark serving as an aisle. In the center right of the photograph, set a little behind the stand, a marching band is seated. Firefighters are standing at attention both on the field and in the bleachers in the foreground of the photograph. The bleachers on the far side of the field are empty. Large public address speakers are resting on small stages facing the bulk of the officers. Original resource is a color photograph.
