Cotton Bowl football tackle of Rice Institute's Dicky Maegle, view # 3 of 3
William M. Rice Institute's football player, Dicky Maegle, has just been tackled by the University of Alabama football player, Tommy Lewis, during the 1954 Cotton Bowl game. Lewis illegally tackled Maegle from the Alabama sideline. Several Alabama football players are on the field, including number 33, as well as William M. Rice Institute football player number 78. The sideline is crowded with off-field Alabama players and coaching staff. Despite the controversial move, the Rice Owls were awarded a touchdown. Original resource is a black and white photograph.
At this Cotton Bowl game, Rice vs. Alabama, an Alabama player (Tommy Lewis) jumped off the bench to tackle Rice's Dicky Maegle, who was running for a touchdown. Rice was awarded the touchdown and went on to win the game 28-6.
