William M. Rice Institute's football player, Dicky Maegle, is being tackled by the University of Alabama football player, Tommy Lewis, during the 1954 Cotton Bowl game. Lewis illegally tackled Maegle from the Alabama sideline. Alabama football players number 54 and 33 and William M. Rice Institute football player number 78 are also on the field. The sideline is crowded with off-field Alabama players and coaching staff. Despite the controversial move, the Rice Owls were awarded a touchdown. Original resource is a black and white photograph.
At this Cotton Bowl game, Rice vs. Alabama, an Alabama player (Tommy Lewis) jumped off the bench to tackle Rice's Dicky Maegle, who was running for a touchdown. Rice was awarded the touchdown and went on to win the game 28-6.
