Dr. Hubert Bray, Rice Institute
Hubert Bray came to Rice in 1916 as a teaching fellow, and two years later, he received Rice’s 1st Ph.D. in mathematics. He stayed on at Rice, becoming Professor and Head of Mathematics in 1935. In 1959, upon his initial retirement, he was named to a unique position: Trustees Distinguished Professor of Mathematics. He continued teaching and retired again in 1970, at the age of 81.
