In 1908, the Rice Institute Board of Trustees sent their newly chosen President, Edgar Odell Lovett, on a world tour seeking out the best aspects of the leading colleges and universities. On this tour, he gathered information about faculty structures, university architecture, and made important contacts with scholars from all over the world.

The original materials from the trip are in the Lovett family papers. The finding aid can be found at http://library.rice.edu/collections/WRC/finding-aids/manuscripts/0494

An online exhibition of the World Tour is available online.
