The senior season for Whitlow was one for the record book. The center began the year as team captain and ended the year with a long list of kudos. He was selected all-Southwest Conference at his position and later selected the league’s Most Valuable Player by the Houston Post and the team’s MVP – winner of the George Martin Award – by his teammates. He also garnered national recognition with his invitation to participate in the 1940 Blue-Gray Game, aznd [sic] later, state recognition with his induction into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. In 1945, Whitlow was hired by Paul “Bear” Bryant at the University of Maryland and then made the trek with him to the University of Kentucky in the spring of 1946. He left the position prior to the start of the 1946 season to play for the Miami Sea Hawks of the All-America Football Conference. He left football for good in 1947 when he was hired by E.I. duPont de Nemours and Company, where he was employed until 1969, when he died of leukemia.
