dc.description Black and white photograph of Rice Owls track and field athlete James "Jess" Petty, accompanied by text headlining his achievement and entry into the Rice Athletic Hall of Fame.
dc.description Caption reads: One of the truly great discus men of Southwest Conference history, JESS PETTY brought considerable honor and aclaim [sic] to Rice Institute. Inevitably, the improvements over the years in techniques and facilities have resulted in modern marks by top discus men to be well above Petty’s best. But in the early 1930’s this man made headlines over the country with his throwing exploits. In 1935, he set a Texas Relays record of 163-3 and a Southwest Conference record of 157-7 that stood for many years. He won the Texas, Kansas, and Drake Relays, as well as the Border Olympics and the SWC. He was Southwest Conference champ for three varsity years. Petty was fourth at the national AAU, just missing a chance to make the U.S. Olympic team in 1936. Petty was given his nickname of “Jess” by a sportswriter back in his competitive days at Rice. He came to the Institute from Kaufman High (near Dallas) in the fall of 1931 as James C. Petty and “J.C.” But a sports report once referred to him as “Jess”, and the name stuck with him. “Jess” appreciated his Rice degree. Benefitting from his education, he went on to become a certified public accountant. He was born on Sept. 27, 1912, at Seagoville.
