dc.description Black and white photograph of Rice Owls track and field athlete Gawain Guy, accompanied by text headlining his achievement and entry into the Rice Athletic Hall of Fame.
dc.description Caption reads: GAWAIN GUY moved across town to Rice in 1981 after completing an exceptional high school career at Pasadena Dobie High School. Guy led the Dobie Longhorns to the Texas State Conference 5A championship by winning the 1,600 meter title the year after taking the state gold medal in the 800 as a junior in 1981. Later that season, Guy won the top high school title in the nation, taking the one mile run at the prestigious Golden West Invitational in Sacramento, Calif. A native of Jamaica, he continued his running excellence at Rice, leading the Owls as a sophomore in 1982 to the Southwest Conference indoor two-mile relay championship in a meet record time of 7:35.11. He earned outdoor NCAA all-America honors in the 1,500 meters in 1983 and again in 1986, taking a year off in 1984 to compete for Jamaica in the Los Angeles Olympic Games in the 1,500 meters. Following the Olympic year, Guy returned to competition for the Owls, winning the SWC 880-yeard championship in 1985, followed by the NCAA indoor 1,000-meter championship a month later, earning all-America honors again in 1986. He holds Rice school records in the 1,000 yards, 1,000 meters, 1500 and one-mile runs, finishing 3:58.21 in the latter race at the Penn Relays in 1983. He set a Rice track stadium mark of 4:02.43 in the one-mile run in 1987 after graduation while training to represent the country of his new citizenship—the United States—in the 1988 Olympic Games. Guy finished his Rice career as a multiple all-America honoree and Rice record holder in four different races earning letters in 1982, ’83, ’85 and ’86.
