Rice Institute Owls football player John Underwood
Black and white photograph of Rice Institute Owls football player John Underwood, class of 1922, accompanied by text headlining his achievement and entry into the Rice Athletic Hall of Fame. Caption reads: The late JOHN “BIG HEAVY” UNDERWOOD (1922) was the first of many illustrious “athletic family” men to star at Rice. He earned four football letters beginning in his freshman year, winning consensus SWC All-Conference honors in 1920 and 1921 at guard. At six three and weighing up to 260, he then played pro football for the old-time Milwaukee Bears with all-time great “Bo” McMillan and Jimmie Conzelman as teammates against such as the Canton Bulldogs featuring Jim Thorpe. “Big Heavy” came from Honey Grove High, preceding by five years Wash “Little Heavy” (who only weighed 230) Underwood (1927), inducted into the Rice Athletic Hall of Fame in 1970. “Big Heavy” died in 1932.
