dc.description Caption reads: WELDON G. HUMBLE, born in Nixon, Gonzales County, attended Breckenridge High School in San Antonio where he lettered in football, basketball, track and swimming. He entered Rice in 1940 and starred at football and track, becoming Sophomore All-American in 1941, and All-Conference and Most Valuable Player in 1942. For three years, between his junior year and 1946, he served with the Marines, earning the bronze star for action in the Pacific. He returned to Rice to graduate with the class of “47, meanwhile winning new honors for his pigskin exploits. He was All-American Guard in 1946 and became the first Rice man elected to the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame. He captained the team that whipped Tennessee on Jan. 1, 1947, in the Orange Bowl and subsequently was named to the all-time All Orange Bowl Team. Seven years of professional football with the Cleveland Browns and the Dallas Cowboys was interrupted when the Marines recalled him for the Korean War. For 20 years as officer of the First City National Bank, he now is executive vice president of Stationers, Inc. He is past president and chairman of the Astro Blue-bonnet Bowl, and president of the local chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame. Now a director, he is past president of the R Association. Humble and his wife, the former Lorraine Merritt, live at 12219 Broken Bough. Their children are Weldon II, Rice ’71; Jim, in high school, and Lorraine, a University of Texas junior.
