dc.description Caption reads: Weldon Humble (1947) was the first Rice man elected to the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame. He was a consensus All-American at guard in 1946. Coming to Rice from San Antonio (Breckenridge), Humble was All-SWC guard and voted the George Martin Award as most valuable for Rice in 1942. After three years in the Marines including combat in the Pacific, he returned to Rice in 1946 to become all-everything as captain of the co-champion Owls who whipped Tennessee in the Orange Bowl. Humble also was a point-winning weight man in track and field. Humble went on to win all-pro football honors with the champion Cleveland Browns then Dallas Cowboys, even though recalled by the Marines during the Korean War. Now vice president of Stationers Inc. after 21 years with First City National Bank in Houston, Humble is active in support of Rice as a member of the Faculty Committee for Athletics representing the alumni.
