Rice Institute Owls football player G. L. "Buddy" Dial
Black and white photograph of Rice Institute Owls football player G. L. "Buddy" Dial, class of 1959, accompanied by text headlining his achievement and entry into the Rice Athletic Hall of Fame. Caption reads: G. L. “BUDDY” DIAL (1959) was outstanding lineman in the SWC his sophomore year, All-SWC his junior year, All-American his senior year, then twice All-Pro in his eight years with the Pittsburg Steelers and Dallas Cowboys. Amazingly, he started his career in six man football at tiny Magnolia High. For Rice, Buddy’s top miracles came a week apart – where he actually outflew the football to make catches that beat Arkansas one week and then No. 1-in-the-nation Aggies the next to help win the 1957 SWC Championship for Rice. Buddy is now going good in the real estate business in Dallas and is active as a deacon in the First Baptist Church there.
