Marie Lee Phelps attended Rice Institute and Columbia University. In her youth, she attended Kinkaid School in Houston, Texas, and The Hockaday boarding school in Dallas. Her grandfather, Judge George Clark, was Attorney General of Texas, who ran for governor against James Hogg and lost in 1892 election. Marie married Merrick Weitz Phelps, and had two children, Stuart Lee Phelps and Maria Phelps. Mr. and Mrs. Phelps helped found the St. Johns School in Houston. Mrs. Phelps published a Houston history book entitled "On the Corner of Main and Texas, A Houston Legacy" in the 1980s, and also helped found the Houston Zoo and the Houston Heritage Society. Some time after the death of Mr. Phelps, she married Sam McAshan. She died in the year 2000.
