James Chillman, Jr., served as the first director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. His tenure at the MFAH lasted from 1924-1953. During his tenure, Chillman also held a professorship in the School of Architecture at Rice University. He returned to the MFAH as interim director between 1959-1961. He was named Director emeritus upon his initial retirement and remained active at the MFAH until his death in 1972.
