dc.description Men threshing rice on a Beaumont-area farm.
dc.description.abstract Around the 1900's Japanese were invited to the Webster and other Harris County areas to develop rice farms on the flat prairies. Rice continues to be one of the agricultural products grown in Harris County. In the 1990's county agriculture embraced 50,000 irrigated acres planted in rice, soybeans, grains, hay, corn, and vegetables. The county rural areas are rapidly declining as the city of Houston expands in all directions. (From Handbook of Texas Online)
