The contemporary city demands new investigations and strategies for understanding the spaces and environments within the urban fabric. The need for adequate housing is continuing to intensify and can be programmed into space that is unused and lost within the city. By acquiring these spaces, which were originally designed for other functions, and negotiating program and space, it is possible to reappropriate residential housing. Using the methods of the prosthetic, the new program can be understood as a new integration within an existing system. As the two bodies adjust to the limitations and demands of the other, they begin to create a new programmatic element within an existing space. The space is allowed to be transformed through program rather than architectural presence and aesthetic.
