Fantasy...In Dreams of Future Fulfillment: A composition for piano and violoncello. (Original composition);
Sarre, Russell Scott
Master of Music
The title of this piece is derived from the following: "fantasy, in contradistinction to logic, which everyone should be able to follow, favours a lack of restraint and a freedom in the manner of expression, permissible in our day only perhaps in dreams; in dreams of future fulfillment ... " Arnold Schoenberg. (Style and Idea, ed. 1984, 274-275) This piece is constructed from a few small ideas which are juxtaposed with each other in varying ways. There is no development, as such, nor is there a sense of harmonic movement. Rather, gestures are established and simply placed into the structure; as such, this is, in essence, a gesturally motivated work. The structure is primarily episodic with a recapitulation and coda. These episodes make a large scale A-B-A form, with "senza misura" sections separating the main sections.
