This recording and transcript form part of a collection of oral history interviews conducted by Center for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality at Rice University. This collection includes video recordings and transcripts of interviews with Houstonians who have made contributions to the LGBT community.

Don Kelly was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1940. He moved to Texas more than 50 years ago to join the U.S. Air Force and serve his country. After earning a Bachelor of Arts from the University of St. Thomas and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Kansas in 1967, he began a professional career in city government. He worked as a city manager, director of regional services, and executive director in various departments in east Texas. After serving his fellow Texans for 35 years, he retired in 2000. A social activist, Kelly collected rare LGBTQIA+ documents, journals, literary works to help understand the history of gay people. The Don Kelly Research Collection of Gay Literature and Culture was acquired by Texas A&M University in 2015.
