dc.description This recording and transcript form part of a collection of oral history interviews conducted by the Chao Center for Asian Studies at Rice University. This collection includes audio recordings and transcripts of interviews with Asian Americans native to or living in Houston.
dc.description.abstract The special oral history collection is created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The special oral history collection is created in response to COVID-19 that started in February 2020. Dr. Nusrat Ameen is the Senior director of Legal Services and Education at Daya, a non-profit organization that provides culturally competent support for South Asian victims of domestic violence. She discusses the effects of COVID-19 on victims of domestic violence, such as increased difficulty with child custody and government benefits. She also discusses how Daya has modified its approach to be more accessible during the pandemic through virtual meetings. Lastly, she touches on the role of Asian Americans in the Black Lives Matter movement that gained momentum after the murder of George Floyd.
