Alfred's of Houston Delicatessen
Alfred Julius Kahn was born April 10, 1918, in Tholey, Germany. He immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1936 to escape the Nazis. Alfred joined the U.S. Army and served in the Pacific during World War II. He worked at Leon’s Delicatessen prior to the war, and he opened his own restaurant in 1948 at 2408 Rice Blvd - eventually adding two more locations in Houston, at Stella Link and Town and Country. Alfred’s of Houston Delicatessen/Restaurant/Pastry Shoppe was Houston’s definitive Jewish deli during its run of over forty years. The Rice Boulevard location closed in the 1970s, and his last restaurant at 9123 Stella Link was still in operation at his death. Alfred Kahn died May 1, 1995.
