Existing methods for determining beam overlap integrals in merging beams experiments are examined, and a new semiautomatic method is presented. The apparatus consists of a driven beam scanner and an analog calculator which computes two-dimensional overlap integrals directly from the sampled beam currents. The three-dimensional overlap integral is obtained from a simple additional computation. Results of qualitative and quantitative tests demonstrate the validity of the technique. The capability for rapid measurement of beam overlap facilitates the determination of absolute reaction cross sections.
