A passive seismic experiment was used in the Gulf Coastal Plain of Texas to obtain estimates of the depth of the Louann formation. Comparing the arrival times for teleseismic P waves through salt domes, and the same phase through usually lower-velocity sediments near the dome, give a time difference which is proportional to the thickness of the overlying sedimentary column above the Louann formation. Three domes were selected for the study: Hockley, Nash, and Hoskins salt domes. Estimated depths to the Louann in the vicinity of the three domes mentioned above, were 21,5, 24,, and 33, ft, respectively.
