The photorefractive effect in lithium niobate doped by diffusion

Techniques were developed to dope lithium niobate by diffusion with several transition-group elements. The elements attempted were Cu, Pd, Rh, V, and Ag. Optical quality doped samples were successfully made with Cu, Pd, and Rh. The methods of doping by diffusion and of sample preparation are discussed in some detail. Simultaneous measurement of photoconductivity and holographically measured photorefractive sensitivity were obtained at several values of applied electric field. A theory of drift dominated charge transport of short mean free path, photoexcited electrons is presented and shown to agree with experimental observation. Optical absorption spectra were obtained for each sample.
