A helium negative ion source for the Rice University Tandem Van de Graaff accelerator

A helium negative ion source using charge exchange in alkali vapor was designed and constructed. Measurements of He production efficiency were made for potassium and lithium vapors at various incident energies between 35 and 7 keV. It was found that lithium is a superior charge exchange medium, and optimum incident energy and oven temperature for this ion source were determined.
