In-situ polymerization initiated by single-walled carbon nanotube salts

Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) bundles can be exfoliated in liquid ammonia through the addition of alkali metal. The use of the resulting SWNT salts to initiate a polymerization reaction is presented in this thesis. This method is a simple, scalable process that allows the covalent attachment of polymer chains to nanotubes in a single step and without the use of sonication. SWNTs-polyethylene, SWNTs-poly(methyl methacrylate) and SWNTs-polyacrylonitrile materials have been synthesized using this chemistry.
