Provenance: A majority of the papers were purchased by Rice University from Mrs. Ora Osterhout Wade in 1958 and a second group of records arrived in October 1962. The collection register of John P. Osterhout was added to the collection in October 1965 as a gift from Herbert Herrick Fletcher. And in November 1992, Harry Yeager donated the book History of the Roberts Family to add to the collection.
Description: 1 page handwritten contract between the school in Bellville, Texas and J.P. Osterhout. He taught spelling, reading and writing, geography, grammar, and arithmetic, and philosophy and Higher Branches.

We the undersigned hereby
agree to pay to John P. Osterhout as
Teacher of a school in the Town of Bellville
County of Austin, State of Texas, for the several
pupils set opposite our names, the following
rates of tuition per month:

For Spelling, Reading & Writing $2.00
“ Geography, Grammar & Arithmetic 2.50
“ Philosophy & Higher Branches 3.00

School will commence on or about the
first Monday in May, A.D. 1852, and
continue for a Session of five months.
