| Abstract: | Dr. Neal Lane served as Provost of Rice University under President Rupp from 1986-1993. He had joined the Rice Physics Department in 1966 and was made full professor in 1972. Dr. Lane was also chairman of the department in 1977. In 1979-1980 he served as director of the division of physics at the National Science Foundation. In 1984 he left Rice to become Chancellor of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs but then returned to Rice by 1986 to become Provost. Retiring from the position of provost, Dr. Lane went on to become the Director of the National Science Foundation in 1993, Director of the U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy, and President Clinton's presidential science and technology advisor in 1998. In spring 2001 Dr. Lane rejoined the faculty at Rice University. |
