| dc.description | The Mrs. Mary J. Bobo Confederate Scrapbook contains pasted newspaper clippings on some of the history and battles of the U.S. Civil War, clippings primarily from the Nashville (Tenn.) Banner. Principally, the battles at Murphreesboro and Chickamauga are noted. The scrapbook also has death notices of ordinary Civil War soldiers, particularly those from Tennessee, as well as more famous Confederates like Colonel William Campbell Preston Breckinridge. In addition, it holds reprints of Civil War and post-Civil War poetry and songs. Some clippings pay tribute to the Confederacy’s most well known generals like Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee. Articles related to Confederate veterans’ reunions and the United Daughters of the Confederacy are also found in the scrapbook. Some of the more interesting articles include “Why Booth Shot Lincoln: Some Unwritten History” (on the third leaf) and a serialized autobiography by former lieutenant colonel and commander of the 25th Alabama Calvary Battalion Milus E. Johnston entitled “The Sword of the ‘Bushwacker’ Johnston” (on leaves 5-23). On the back paste-down endpaper of the scrapbook are two old, faded photographs of Mary J. Bobo. |
