Abstract: Richard E. Smalley and Robert Curl won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1996 for the discovery and characterization of fullerenes, the third elemental form of carbon after graphite and diamond. Smalley and Curl co-founded the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology at Rice University in 1993.
