Abstract:
|
Paredes y Arrillaga (1797-1849) was a veteran of the war of independence from Spain (famously fighting on both sides) and an important supporter of Anastasio Bustamante’s anti-imperialist feud with Agustin de Iturbide. He was also an early supporter of Santa Anna’s, but by the time of the Mexican-American War was aligned against him. The diplomatic communications presented here, between Paredes y Arrillaga and Joaquin Maria de Castillo y Lanzas on the Mexican side, and John Slidell, the American ambassador to Mexico, show the unwillingness to compromise on all but the most insignificant issues leading up to the war. |
