Title: Pleasantville Apartments, east Houston 1970
Author: Lukes, William
Abstract: These are black and white photographic images of the Pleasantville apartments in east Houston taken in 1970. The development was built as an African American community under Federal Housing Authority (FHA) program 608 in 1951-1953; after sale to private investors in the 1960’s the condition of the development deteriorated significantly, resulting in a rent strike by the tenants. The images were taken by Lukes as part of a joint feasibility study prepared by Rice University students for the FHA and the First Unitarian Church of Houston.
Description: The images included are of the Pleasantville Apartments exteriors and interiors, the residents, and the neighbors.
