Abstract:	Altamirano was a professor, novelist, historian, literary critic, and diplomat. The diaries were written during his posting as Consul General to the Mexican consulate in Barcelona, Spain. His diplomatic duties are mentioned only in passing, and the bulk of the entries cover literary matters and gossip, both European and Mexican, with Altamirano frequently inserting quotes from letters received from his literary colleagues, including Guillermo Prieto. There are also entries dealing with his and his wife’s health, both of them being susceptible to the unexpectedly cold Spanish winters, along with reminiscences of Paris and its many bookstores, and the delights of hearing news of his family from back home.
